TEXTILES ARE EVERYWHERE!
They're in our clothing, furniture, toys and even computers! But how much do you really know about them? What exactly are our textiles made from? How sustainable are they? How far do our clothes travel before we buy them? Where do they go once they're donated?

WHAT IS TEXTILES UNTANGLED?
This collaborative textile sustainability workshop illustrates the complexities and impacts (social and ecological) of the textile industry by using clothing as a case study. You will create the production chain of textiles and learn about the industry’s impact. Then work together to find solutions and actions you can take.

The Textiles UnTangled workshop was launched in 2021 by Green Donut and is inspired by the pedagogy of the Climate Fresk. It is ideal for anyone who wears clothes! From the student interested in circular fashion to the seasoned textile professional, you'll leave equipped with actionable knowledge to share across your organization and communities.

RESPONSIBLE TEXTILE RECOVERY ACT

In July 2026, California's SB 707 (the Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024) came into effect. It makes California the first state in the country to hold clothing and textile producers responsible for what happens to their products at the end of their life. Brands, retailers, and manufacturers selling here are now on the hook for collection and recycling. Cities, reuse organizations, and thrift networks are about to sit at a very different table.

Most people in this state, including professionals working in and around textiles, have no idea this happened. This workshop is your chance to understand the system the law is trying to fix—and to see exactly where San Diego fits into it.

YOU'LL LEARN:

  • Materials 101 - Which fabrics should I choose!?!

  • The life cycle of textiles, from raw materials to end of life

  • Textile industry impacts on the planet and on humans

  • How to think critically of sustainability claims made by companies & organizations

  • Notions of circular economy, systems thinking, and human centered solutions

  • Actions that can be taken on a collective, business, and individual level
